Stainless Steel Cutlery Material Combination: Choosing the Right Solution for Wholesale Projects

Pulished on Aug. 10, 2026

During the years of supplying stainless steel cutlery, we often receive questions from our customers who may be importers, wholesalers, or distributors. They are new to this flatware industry, the first question they would ask is that what’s the differences between various stainless steel materials. And most important thing is which materials should they select for their products. Although we can call them stainless steel, different materials possess distinct characteristics and entail different production costs. Therefore, selecting the right stainless steel material is important for enhancing market competitiveness.

We will now introduce two common stainless steel material combinations for the standard four-piece cutlery set: dinner knife, dinner spoon, dinner fork, and teaspoon.

Stainless Steel Cutlery Material Combination: Choosing the Right Solution for Wholesale Projects

420 Stainless Steel for Knives

In the production of stainless steel cutlery, 420 stainless steel is typically selected for dinner knives, while 430 or 304 stainless steel is used for other components such as spoons, forks, and teaspoons.

420 stainless steel is chosen for its superior hardness and strength compared to other materials. It performs very well in cutting tasks—a crucial function for dinner knives—and offers greater durability and wear resistance during daily use, only need minimal maintenance for a long service life.

Professional manufacturers often recommend 420 stainless steel for dinner knives, particularly for establishments like restaurants, hotels, and cafeterias where cutlery must withstand rigorous daily use.

For the remaining pieces in a cutlery set, clients can opt for other stainless steel materials, with 430 and 304 being the most common choices. The specific material selected depends on factors such as market preferences, production costs, and product positioning.

304 v.s. 430 Stainless Steel

304 and 430 are the two most common types of stainless steel encountered in daily life. Products made from these materials appear virtually identical, and both meet food-grade standards. However, due to differences in their structural composition, they vary in terms of rust resistance and magnetic properties.

304 stainless steel belongs to the austenitic family; thanks to its nickel content, it offers excellent corrosion resistance. 430 stainless steel belongs to the ferritic family; it also possesses strong corrosion resistance and is commonly used for items such as tableware and kitchenware.

In everyday use, there is no significant difference in corrosion resistance between 304 and 430; both are rust-resistant stainless steel materials. However, in terms of cost, 430 stainless steel is more economical, making it the preferred choice for large-scale wholesale projects.

There is a relatively easy way to distinguish between these two materials. If you are purchasing stainless steel products and want to know whether they are made of 304 or 430 stainless steel, you can use a magnet; 430 stainless steel is magnetic, whereas 304 stainless steel is not. This difference stems from their distinct internal metallic structures. Notably, magnetic properties are unrelated to whether the material is suitable for food contact; both types of stainless steel can pass food-grade safety testing.

OEM and ODM Options

For everyday stainless steel cutlery, grades 304, 430, and 420 are all excellent choices, as they all meet food-grade safety standards. The choice of material depends primarily on factors such as product positioning, target market preferences, project budgets, and intended usage scenarios.

For instance, high-end cutlery brands often pair 420-grade knives with 304-grade spoons and forks, as 304 stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance. Additionally, certain specialized finishes—such as "antique" or distressed looks—are best suited for 304 stainless steel.

A combination of 420-grade knives with 430-grade spoons and forks is more common in the mass market, as it allows for significant cost savings. Furthermore, due to its magnetic properties, 430 stainless steel is sometimes specifically chosen by creative restaurants to enhance table settings, thereby elevating the dining experience and atmosphere.
