How to choose tableware according to design and producer

Pulished on Jul. 13, 2023

Choosing cutlery is a surprisingly big decision, especially since the average American buys only three sets in their lifetime.  With thousands of patterns to choose from, buying a tableware set can be a daunting task if you don't know what to look for.  That's why we've spent over a hundred hours researching how to make great cutlery, and if you need some advice to make things run smoothly, check out our guide to the best cutlery.

How to choose tableware according to design and producer

1.Set your price range and quantity

Determining how much setting you need and how much you want to spend is the first step in buying tableware.  Cutlery is sold by the piece (open stock), in pre-assembled boxes, or as individual cutlery sets.  Here's how much you should pay for each.

2.Open tableware

If you want to pick out the cutlery you need, many retailers (such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Crate and Barrel, or IKEA) sell single-piece open cutlery for around $2 to $6.  This is an affordable option for college students, holidays, or other times when the guest list may grow and you need to add some extra cutlery immediately.  However, cheap open tableware is often made of low-grade 18/0 stainless steel (our budget choice is an exception) and is stamped rather than forged, so these parts are less corrosion-resistant or durable as options made from 18/10 steel.

3.Place setting

A five-piece tableware set (i.e., salad forks, forks, knives, spoons, and teaspoons) can range in price from a few dollars for stainless steel to over a thousand dollars for sterling silver.  But we think the best price for decent, quality stainless steel tableware is between $20 and $45, and in that price range you'll start to see better quality materials and improved craftsmanship.  Keep in mind that when you buy 4, 8, or 12 pieces of cutlery, most retailers will reduce the price of individual cutlery.  Also, cutlery Settings don't always come with extra cutlery, but if they do, these are always sold separately.

4.Cutlery boxed  set

Boxed tableware is usually sold in three ways: 20 sets (for 4 people), 45 sets (for 8 people, plus portion size) or 65 sets (for 12 people, plus portion size).  Kits typically cost $20 to $180, depending on the type of steel, the level of craftsmanship, and the number of parts in the kit.  "[Box] sets have taken over," and while boxed sets do offer a lot of good value (many of them include extra service pieces in the total cost), sometimes quality, design and craftsmanship suffer because manufacturers want to keep the retail price of the box to a minimum.  Another disadvantage of boxed tableware is that it is difficult to replace lost or damaged tableware, as individual tableware is usually not sold in open stock.  Also, the vast majority of cutlery sets at large stores like Target and Walmart are made of 18/0 stainless steel, so proceed with caution if you're considering this option.
